The World’s Heritage in the Digital Age
New Technologies towards sustainable research, conservation and communication

The mission of the Conference on Cultural Heritage and New Technologies is to bring together scholars from all over the world covering a wide range of disciplines and using the latest technologies for prospection, research, documentation, conservation and presentation and management of the world’s cultural heritage. Despite the difficult Covid-19 situation, over 100 participants from about 20 different nations and various exhibitors and sponsors were present at Vienna City Hall. At the virtual CHNT26, people from over 30 nations were present and could actively participate in the discussions. The conference was opened on Tuesday 2 November by Ruth Pröckl, Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport, who emphasised the importance of coming together and sharing experiences. Mario Santana Quintero, Secretary General of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), who travelled to Vienna especially for the conference, held the first keynote address on Would Digital Technologies allow the Conservation of the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of World Heritage Properties in apost-pandemic time? In the following 3 conference days, the preservation of cultural heritage and the use of new technologies were discussed and debated in 10 sessions and 4 round tables as well as in 3 different trainings, poster session and app presentation. A special focus was placed on Afghanistan and the Bamiyan World Heritage Site this year, in order to draw attention to the precarious situation for cultural heritage and scientists in this country. The past and future of this World Heritage site were discussed in several lectures and in a subsequent discussion panel.

Due to the great success of the conference, it is planned to continue the cooperation between ICOMOS and the CHNT next year.
