Abstract:
The City Museum of Ljubljana (Slovenia) has a decades long tradition in preserving and communicating heritage. In the last decade, we have developed a new successful communication strategy, combining different resources: traditional PR and educational techniques, social networks, mobile phone applications, video and audio guides, QR codes etc.
In the last several years, the shift from only heritage preservation towards its holistic communication has grown stronger. As a public institution responsible for – amongst other – archaeological heritage of Ljubljana, we are obliged to be highly responsive, to communicate any new information regarding this heritage as soon as possible. To do this, we employ new media, but simultaneously, this new media by its very nature compels us, again, to share information as soon as possible.
In the presentation, we aim to present our experiences. We focus on archaeological heritage of Roman town Emona. As a predecessor of modern Ljubljana, with in situ archaeological park, large museum collection and frequent rescue excavations during city renovations, Emona provides both opportunities and challenges for communicating archaeology in a diverse and meaningful way.
