CALL FOR PAPERS

This session is devoted to photogrammetry of cultural heritage monuments and sites using cameras, scanners, etc. mounted on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, also known as “drones”). Papers on the following topics are especially welcome:

  • Presentation of the final results of projects of large-scale 3D mapping facilitated by aerial photography from cameras mounted on UAVs. What are the advantages, disadvantages, and challenges?
  • Successful workflows and best practices for aerial photogrammetry using UAVs. Would creation of a crowd-sourced wiki of best practices be desirable and practical?
  • Comparison of the relative merits of aerial photogrammetry using UAVs and alternative methods for the large-scale 3D mapping of cultural heritage environments. Are photogrammetric models accurate? If not, how can their level of accuracy be increased?
  • Hybrid approaches combining aerial photogrammetry using UAVs with ground-based photography and/or laser scanning. Can you gather all your data from the air, or does it sometimes make sense to capture data on the ground as well?
  • Challenges posed by new and proposed national laws and regulations governing the use of UAVs. How can virtual heritage professionals (VHPs) participate in the formulation of policy affecting the commercial and scientific use of UAVs? What are the interests that VHPs need to defend as new policy is developed by governments around the world?

Presentations of papers can be either short (i.e., 15 minutes) or long (i.e., 20 minutes). When you submit your abstract, please be sure to indicate the length of your presentation. The papers will be published also in Digital Applications in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (http://www.journals.elsevier.com/digital-applications-in-archaeology-and-cultural-heritage/).
