Katarína HARMADYOVÁ / Ján RAJTÁR / Jaroslava SCHMIDTOVÁ (Bratislava, Slovakia) Slovakia took part in the international project “Frontiers of the Roman Empire”, which was aimed to build up an international interconnected net, a guide and an information resource about this cultural route of European importance. Slovakia is represented in the project by the City Museum Bratislava with archaeological sites Rusovce – Gerulata and Devín and by the Archaeological Institute SAS with site Iža – Kelemantia. All three sites rank among the cultural monuments of the highest category. While the exceptional strategic location of Devín Hillfort was exploited by the Romans as a fortified bridgehead in Barbaricum, in Rusovce, a borough in the south of Bratislava, was situated one of the strongholds of Limes Romanus castellum Gerulata. Finally, the Roman castellum Iža lies directly on the left bank of the Danube and served as a bridgehead of legionary camp Brigetio. All three foregoing sites are under excavations. Devín and Rusovce in Bratislava are inhabited sites and archaeological fieldworks are being carried out directly in the housing estates. The site of Iža is for several years aplace of annually organized summer school of archaeology. The City Museum Bratislava presents its archaeological sites through various activities, such as exhibitions, publications, performances and special events for children. In 2008, it will be the 10th year of the Roman Games for children in Gerulata. The conservation and restoration of the monument, which was finished in 2007, was aimed to conserve the masonries and to enhance the display of archaeological finds. As for monument protection, the suggestion to protect the monument on a larger scale has been delivered to the Slovak Republic Ministry of Culture. Activities of Archaeological Institute SAS in Iža can be condensed into following points: Unambiguous delimitation of area under protection and associated buffer zone Clarification of ownership rights and management of the monument Adaptation and presentation of the site. Benno RIDDERHOF (Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) It-Education in archaeology at universities and special schools has always been a problem child. Either the education is non-existent or is limited to basic knowledge like PowerPoint, setting dots in illustrator or scanning for word documents. Even with the new technologies, it-education at universities usually limits itself to an introduction into GIS en Robotic total stations. Students are taught how to use these applications, but not how to understand them. If they are lucky there is a comprehensive database course. Yet even if there is an it-education program at a university, it stands as an exception and is not integrated in the curriculum of the education of the university. Worse still the education has usually no relation to the demands of commercial archaeology, research institutes and heritage. It-education at the Vrije Universiteit is different. The university has developed an it-curriculum in archaeology in collaboration with commercial companies, heritage and research institutes. During the courses the students learn the basics in it-archaeology. From there they have the possibility to expend their knowledge (GIS, Data design, statistics, Cad drawings, cartography and measuring techniques). With these courses it is possible for the students to go to heritage, commercial archaeology and research projects. The poster consists of two parts. The first part depicts It-education during the bachelor and master in archaeology at de Vrije Universiteit . The second part depicts the continuation of the students after the courses at the various projects in The Netherlands and abroad as there are HBS, RACM, CLUE and DCCD. Ismail ÖZTÜRK / Serkan ILDEN (Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, Izmir, Turkey) The fact that the material of manuscripted books is paper, renders them vulnerable to a great variety of impacts. The most effective method of preventing their deterioration appears to be the conservation of the manuscripted material under ideal circumstances and offer to researchers access to the digital copy of the originals. This method plays significant role in the conservation of manuscripts that comprise cultural heritage, as, regardless of the level of optimization of the conservation conditions of a manuscript, every time the manuscript is presented to a researcher, the change in atmospheric conditions (humidity, temparature, light, microbiological environment, etc.) almost certainly occasions its further deterioration. Rendering manuscripts accessible in the digital environment enables both researchers’ easy access and, by transfer to a personal computer, detailed observation as well as preserving deterioration caused by human contact. Yet offering of digital access to researchers has its negative sides as well. These may be classified as problems deriving from the technological infrastructure and problems deriving from the universal accessibility of digital copy. Those deriving from the technological infrastructure consist of questions such as how the manuscript will be conserved in digital form, the formats of access, the security of the digital copies. Given the spread of computer use, the universal accessibility of the digitalized manuscripts, on the other hand, occasions haphazard use of the content of the manuscripts, thus giving rise to information pollution and false information, and making vunerable the security of the digital environment in which the manuscript is offered to access. The development of social and cultural diversity of democratic society is considered as challenge to social reforming. In our opinion, the answer to this challenge could be in the growth of system of functional diversity or participating management with use the resources of cultural heritage as the base of constructive democratic development. Cultural and historical heritage is great resource of educational activity and social-spiritual development. The historical monuments and any ancient traces are material manifestations of human creativity and cultural dialogue in time. The heritage is great information complex and we should know how we can to use its creative potential. Management of cultural heritage becomes one of urgent task of contemporary educational policy. The cultural-historical heritage is stages leading up us from past to future times. But we should not forget that heritage expressed the complicated configuration cultural and natural landscapes in human’s environment. The cultural heritage of the Samara region is great and diverse. It has been developed b? many generations of different nations. Here the ways of eastern and western, southern and northern cultures, ethnicities, religions were trans-crossing.
