Research experience of 3D scanning for the digital preservation of Christian temples in Abkhazia/Georgia

Christianity came to Abkhazia in the first century AD with the two disciples of Jesus Christ, the Apostle Andrew and Simon the Zealot. As the vital task today in the country is considered as digital preservation and protection of heritage. The pilot research performed served the purpose of initiating the process of digitization of heritage documentation in the country. Nowadays, Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) technology is considered as a well established resource for heritage documentation and protection. Using highly precise laser measurement systems laser scanning of three big and the most famous Christian monuments of Abkhazia was performed: the St. Apostol Simon the Canaanite New Athos Monastery, the St. Apostol Simon temple in New Athos and The Patriarch Pitsunda St. Andrew the First Called Cathedral. Field works were performed during two days. A 3D model of these temples has become the result of mapping and the following treatment. We captured a number of points cloud data with high density and high accuracy, mapped the texture data into the digital model and a 3-D model with high accuracy was achieved. Augmented Reality for the documentation of Villa Adriana in Tivoli, Rome

Stefano BERTOCCI | Mattia VENTIMIGLIA (University of Florence, department of architecture) Abstract: During the annual survey campaigns of Villa Adriana in Tivoli (Rome), in collaboration with the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Lazio, a fruitful scientific collaboration for the study of the whole complex emerged that could become the field of sperimentation of the latest techniques of Digital Survey, whose outputs can be configured as photorealistic 3D models navigable and searchable. The applications and scientific results accrued through years of experiments conducted by the Laboratory of Survey of Department of Architecture of University of Florence have allowed to develop applications of the most advanced digital technologies in the field of survey for the digital documentation of architectural and archaeological heritage thanks to augmented reality. The campaign involved the Palace Area, the first nucleus of the imperial residence built where there was a preexisting republican villa. The first part of the work led to the generation of a three dimensional point cloud of the area generated with the use of laser scanners; later was created a photogrammetric model of the entire complex, scaled and oriented through the cloud of points itself. The generated model was finally put online and was created a planimetry, which can be read by any mobile device with a camera and internet connection, which acts as a key to access to the view of the virtual model in augmented reality. The construction of such project conceived on a larger scale would allow to make available the information for different levels of users and, could be aimed to both technical experts and a wider audience, highlighting thematic routes also for tourism; the activities of systematizing the information and data by creating cognitive structures that, resubmitting the complexity of reality, make it possible to develop experiments and development forecasts congruous with the Management Plan of the site. RFID- Chip Technology in Archaeology (Excavation, Museum and Depository)

A massive increase of acquired data is following this development. The efficient management of this data is becoming more and more important. Archaeological research is based on findings of artifacts and other objects in archaeological context during historical and pre-historical periods. Excavations can yield a large amount of findings. They also are stored in Museums and depositories. In this work shop we will deal with RFID Chip technology (Radio Frequency IDentification)  for the archiving of findings and of other relevant material. We will learn how RFID technology can help to organize items.
