Outline: Currently available ALS-data of GIS-Styria will be evaluated all over the country to get an all-embracing picture of the archaeological terrain-monuments in the ground-relief.
This data-pool has been compared with the archaeological data-base at the department for care and preservation of ancient monuments in Styria.
Differences in the quantity of archaeological terrain-monuments have been analyzed. The acquisition of their location and their dimension has been appraised in view of the preservation of monuments.

Abstract: The project is concerned with the analysis of the currently available ALS-data of GIS-Styria in the face of their informative value for the preservation of archaeological monuments. It was supported by the department for the protection of monuments and GIS-Styria. Primarily a broad as possible data-pool of archaeological find-spots which someone can discover in the ALS-pictures of the landscape has been collected. Then all information up to now known about archaeological terrain-monuments has been compared and respectively completed with the received data. At these following points are of importance: Multiplication of the established stock of archaeological find spots, the exact acquisition of their position at the basis of cadastre and geographical coordinates, identification of their dimension, localisation of so-called “old-news” (the literature mentioned find-spots without an exact localisation).  In further consequence the greater-area settlement structure of a territory, for instance the basin of Graz and Leibnitz, the Aichfeld, the edges of the valleys, the major river valleys or the mountain territories of Ennstal have been checked. With this approach the specific criteria of a landscape can be filtered. Moreover chronological characteristics for the choice of an appointed place for a settlement or a burial place have been researched. These selected areas have been depicted in terms of an overall view. In addition all routes between these points have been implicated. In the course of my work the potential and the limits of this method of remote sensing for archaeology and protection of monuments have been reviewed.
