CALL for PAPERS

Description of the session: Digital technologies enable a novel form of research-based engagement with the historical palimpsest of the urban fabric. Within the context of the wider humanities preoccupation with the ‘spatial turn’, digital tools have afforded researchers new approaches for both research and user engagement through the development of new interpretative methods delivered through locative media technologies. Such approaches – delivered in a variety of forms including apps and web apps, some of them employing elements of augmented reality – have been applied to the exploration of a variety of heritage environments, especially of historic urban areas. This session invites papers that present either comparative or case-base examples, although we would invite all presenters to frame these through analytical consideration of such practices and methods.
Papers might consider:
- how do locative media enable place-based visualisation of tangible (e.g. texts, books, images, objects and performances) and intangible heritage, offering alternative means of recording, archiving and experiencing these?
- how does a consideration of the user experience alter research questions and indeed the research practices of academic Researchers?
- what kind of research topics are inspired by designing a locative application?
- what tensions may emerge between the imperatives of location-based user experience design within the urban fabric, research-led processes and the needs of heritage organisations to deliver public-facing locative Interpretation?
