One of the main purposes of the archaeological research is the understanding of the landscape as the entire system of natural and man made elements defining an ancient culture. A detailed recording of the archaeological landscape is not only the backbone for a complete research but it is also compulsory for the protection and enhancement of national and world heritage.
For this presentation we chose five important Dacian sites of the Carpathian Mountains where our team has made intense interdisciplinary researches (Covasna, Cârlomanesti, Pietroasa Mica, Ardeu and Magura Moigradului). These are sites of different types ( settlements, fortresses, sacred enclosures) from the 2nd century B.C. – 1st century A.D. situated in various zones of the Geto-Dacians territory.
These interdisciplinary researches contribute to a complex gathering of field information (about the fortifications, complexes, artefacts) and large data basis, and a deeper understanding of these communities integration in the given environment. We developed for the archaeological research process different levels of approaches: creation of the overall IT framework for all the researching stages; data recording, management and analyzes;

  • sharing of these information through all the team members;
  • virtual reconstruction of the environment, man made structures and specific behaviors;
  • presentation of the main results of research

For each of these requirements certain instruments and methods were used. The study of large scale historical phenomena and the integration of particular features into a more complete and extended context become possible.
