Round Table
CALL for SHORT PAPERS

Chair: Günter MÜHLBERGER, University of Innsbruck, Austria

Description of the round table: The University of Innsbruck, Digitisation and Digital Preservation group runs the EU H2020 Project READ (Recognition and Enrichment of Archival Documents). One of the main deliverables of the project was the creation of the Transkribus platform. With Transkribus it is possible to cover the whole workflow of document digitisation from image capturing, transcription, recognition to searching and exporting. Core modules such as text recognition, segmentation and document understanding are built with machine learning methods so that an adaptation to specific documents can be done easily. The technology is language independent, any kind of script, handwritten or printed, cursive or Latin, Arabic or Hebrew alphabets can be handled. Also different types of documents such as notebooks, registers, tables, or catastre maps can be processed.
More than 8500 users are already registered in the Transkribus platform, and with more than 50 institutions, namely archives, libraries, and universities all over the world cooperation agreements were concluded so far. The platform is open to everyone after Registration.

The main reason to apply for this round table is that we were approached several times by archaeologists who are working with old handwritten documents from former archaeological campaigns. The chance to digitise these notebooks easily and to search for every word offers a new way to access these documents.

For the round table we plan to cover the most important aspects of a typical digitisation project. The round table would be opened by 10′ statements:

  1. General introduction to the Transkribus platform (Guenter Muehlberger, University of Innsbruck, project manager)
  2. Layout Analysis and Document Understanding
  3. Keyword Spotting in handwritten documents
  4. Archaeological documents and their specificalities

Target groups:

  • Collection holders of historical documents relevant for archaeology (Notebooks, personal papers, diaries, etc..)
  • Researchers working with historical documents
  • Students in archaeology, history, and similar disciplines
  • Volunteers supporting archaeological projects

Specifics: The round tabel could be accompanied with a workshop for those who want to get hands on Transkribus. Usually 2-3h are sufficient to get a first introduction to the platform. Workshop participants can come with their own documents and the complete workflow could be demonstrated directly on basis of these documents.
