From Roman to Medieval / Early Modern Pottery

Call for short presentations

Round Table A8

Chairs | Ursula EISENMENGER / Ingeborg GAISBAUER, Austria

This Round Table offers an opportunity to discuss various topics, especially:

  • Transportation and loss of information – the base of every data base?
  • How can pottery be classified? Are definitions like reduced/oxide firing, coarse or fine wares still state of art?
  • Problems of communication between Roman and Medieval pottery
  • The benefit of expensive/extensive/time demanding methods of testing and processing
  • Does it make sense to pay for thin section if the results are not comparable with other publications or the excavation documentation lacks stratigraphic context? Especially in times of dwindling resources the concept of well -structured research questions is of the essence.
  • And –last but not least: is every fragment precious?

Dear colleagues, we expect short presentations (up to five minutes) to keep the discussion lively!

Venue: Obere Augartenstraßen 26-28, Keramikraum (pottery room) 2nd floor.
