ICOMOS stands for “International Council on Monuments and Sites” and is an NGO that works worldwide for the protection, care and preservation of historic cultural heritage. ICOMOS was founded in 1965 in Krakow, Poland, following the adoption of the Venice Charter in 1964 at the Second Congress of Architects and Specialists of Historic Buildings.

ICOMOS is involved as advisor and evaluator in the work of the World Heritage Committee and in the fulfilment of the UNESCO Convention on World Heritage. ICOMOS is organised into over 120 National Committees, which can be joined as individual members. In addition, ICOMOS has 28 International Scientific Committees that deal with specific topics of research, heritage conservation and heritage management.

The national committee ICOMOS Austria currently has more than 80 individual members whose mandate is based on proven expertise in all disciplines related to heritage protection (architecture, history of art, archaeology, jurisprudence, restoration, material sciences, etc.).

ICOMOS Austria is committed to the conservation of monuments, ensembles and cultural landscapes at national and international level. In order to advise experts and the public and to promote public interest in monument protection and conservation, ICOMOS Austria is active in the following areas, among others:

– Monitoring and information on monuments on the World Heritage List,

– Preparation and organisation of international colloquia and conferences on issues of monument protection and conservation,

– Publication of conference results and important policy papers on heritage conservation,

– Cooperation with other National Committees as well as with various national bodies (Association of State Monument Conservators, Austrian UNESCO Commission, BDA) and with international organisations (UNESCO, ICCROM, Council of Europe).

Since 2021, the association CHNT-ICOMOS Austria has taken over the organisation of the international conference Cultural Heritage and New Technologies.
