In Kuusisto medieval castle has been excavations and buildingarchaeological studies going on last 25 years (partly by author). Autocad was first used in 1992, total station was coming to castle in 1993, measuring polylines with z in 1994, first 3d-modelings in 1994, model of hole castle in 3dmax 2000 etc In 2006-2007 heliumball + digical camera and photography is used in ruins.
The history of documentation means that in our archive we have hundreds of papermaps, oldway-pictures and raports and then we have some hundreds of files of the documentation done in digital way (maps, pictures and raports). Digital material is still usable in programs but it is not yet put inside in any archivesystem or database.
In years 2008-2009 our plan is to build database from traditional and digital material but the problem is that are we building archive just with links to original material (scan the material to digital format) or should we reproduce the material to real 3d-dokumentation even afterwards.
Should we start to modell old excavations in ground and in walls and build the hole system in real 3d or just making a simple 3d-modell for orientation and the leave the material in scanninglevel. For research the real 3d-modell should be much better to understand very complex castle and it´s life in using time.
One question is that to whom we are building the researchmodell – for archaeologist or for everybody? And one question is that what should we do different if we start our project now and not 25 years ago?
