Abstract:
The range of possibilities how to use new technology in the field of digitalization of cultural heritage is huge. We would like to share our ideas about how to use 3D scanning and 3D printing in educational tourism. The digitalization of cultural heritage is connected to an unlimited access to information. Thanks to new technology, it is possible to present the viewer with this information in a fun way that is not limited just to the virtual world – their computer. The project “Digital Re-sculpt” with which studio Artzoom was nominated for the IK Prize held by Tate Britain is concerned with the possibilities of presenting digitally enlarged art replicas made via the technology of 3D scanning and 3D printing. These replicas are then placed in public spaces. This creates a new context for the artworks, a new interaction with the public, and new possibilities for educational tourism. This outdoor exposition of enlarged sculptures creates an uncommon learning experience where anyone can immediately react to these important works of art. With the help of a computer application that is included in the project, the viewer can engage in discovering artworks on a tourist trail and access textual information about the artwork from their smartphone or tablet. Placing the enlarged replicas of famous artworks from regional galleries into public areas offers a different experience of discovering new destinations and the cultural heritage of the given local region.
