Abstract:
The STSM (Short Time Scientific Mission) “Investigation of 3D modelling workflows in CH with the object of development of key concepts and definitions” is a subproject of the COSCH Action. The project COSCH is one part of the COST Action with the purpose to create a framework called COSCHKR as an international and interdisciplinary platform for state-of-the-art documentation of cultural heritage (CH)

The aim of the STSM was to identify similarities and differences of typical working processes and methodologies as well as typologies in the field of CH 3D modelling and visualisations.
For this, the main topic was the analysis, evaluation and comparison of thirty different 3D projects of four institutes, which are partners in COSCH Action:
• Department of Digital Humanities – Kings College London
• Department of Computer Science – University of Sarajevo
• Department Digital Design (earlier: Information and Communication Technology in Architecture) – Technische Universität Darmstadt
• Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central

The following research questions were the basis for the investigation:
• Are there any similarities or differences between the different workflows and methods?
• What are the causes for these similarities or differences?
• Are there any dependencies between properties, potentials, application scope and possibilities?
• Is it possible to define some general phases of a workflow as a basic for further research?
• Are there any principles of the methodology?
• It is possible to define types of CH visualisations?

Based on the investigation it was possible to generate first results in two main topics:
• Definition of types of CH visualization
• Definition of a working process as an framework

The lecture at CHNT will present these results of the STSM in context to COSCH Action as well as the current discussion in the field of 3D visualisations in CH in relation to the preservation of knowledge and the definition of standards.
