Outline: Preparation, implementation and maintenance of distance training considering spatial dispersal and time constraints of training groups.

The paper aims to discuss technological and methodological aspects of the e-learning course ‘Archaeology in contemporary Europe’ prepared within the Leonardo da Vinci project in the years 2007-2009. In particular, it will present technical solutions making possible to prepare, implement and maintain the course, in particular LMS/LCMS platform and interactive multimedia e-learning modules. The following LMS/LCMS platform functionalities, as seen from the distance learning viewpoint will be discussed: SCORM standard implementation, tracking students, and communication tools. Introduction of interactive multimedia e-learning modules into learning process was caused by the chosen mode training in the form of assisted web based training.
Furthermore, the paper will discuss the structure and production process of e-learning modules. Special attention will be focused upon training methods implemented among employees of the archaeological heritage sector. These methods of preparing and conducting the training had to consider spatial dispersal of the target group, its time constraints as well as the group professional interests. The assisted web based training was chosen as it was impossible to introduct traditional meetings with students into learning process. This approach led teachers to apply a set of learning methods encouraging active participation of the trainees in the training process, in particular forum discussions as well as individual and collaborative essays.
