ADVANCED ARCHAEOLOGICAL TRAINING

Organisers: Karin WILTSCHKE-SCHROTTA | Michaela BINDER, Austria

(Workshop in connection with the session Disclosing the Dead)

Working with human remains from archaeological sites, one sometimes comes across traces of trauma which are often difficult to detect, particularly if the bones are fragmentary. One of the main challenges remains differentiating between taphonomic damage and wounds occurring around or shortly after the time of death. Having seen the wide range potential patterns of trauma in skeletal remains will help the investigator to identify and correctly interpret traces of impact even on poorly preserved bone.

This hands on workshop presents a variety of examples of evidence of weapon induced trauma on the human skeleton. Ranging from lethal to well healed; the shown cases will give the participants the opportunity to see a comprehensive assemblage of rare cases in comparison.
